Maj. Gen. Paul M. Benenati was assigned as the First Army Deputy Commanding General-Support on September 21, 2014. He is responsible for assisting the Commanding General with the training, readiness and mobilization of Army Reserve and National Guard units across the United States and two U.S. territories. He is also the Commander, First Army Reserve Support Command.
Maj. Gen. Benenati was commissioned into the Military Police Corps in 1980 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Richmond (Virginia).
Prior to becoming First Army Deputy Commanding General-Support, Maj. Gen. Benenati served concurrently as Commanding General, 7th Civil Support Command, and Deputy Commanding General, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, at Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he was responsible for Disaster Response, Humanitarian Assistance and Consequence Management throughout Europe and Africa. Previously, he was Commander, 451st Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), Wichita, Kan. Immediately prior to that assignment, he served concurrently as Commander, 102nd Training Division (Maneuver Support), and Deputy Commanding General for Mobilization and Training for the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
Since September 11, 2001, Maj. Gen. Benenati has served on several Active Duty tours, including Commander, 2-80th Military Police Battalion, training Soldiers during Operation Noble Eagle at Fort Dix, N.J. and Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif.; Commander, 7th Brigade, 80th Division, in Salem, Va.; and Commander, 1st Brigade (Initial Entry Training), at Fort Meade, Md. He was mobilized to support Operation Iraqi Freedom serving as the Mobilization Station Commander for deploying 80th Division units, and as the Commander of the Emergency Operations Center and Chief of Mobilization. He served in Iraq responsible for the reception, staging, onward movement, integration and redeployment activities before returning to serve as the Assistant Division Commander and Acting Commander of the 94th Training Division.
His earlier experience includes Battalion Operations Officer for 318th Regiment, Military Police Battalion (MP-One Station Unit Training), Fort Eustis, Va.; Brigade Liaison Officer, Division Plans, Operations and Security Officer, Deputy Provost Marshal, Physical Security Officer and Safety Officer for the 80th Division (Institutional Training), Richmond, Va.; and Deputy Provost Marshal and Chief of Administrative Services, 2174th U.S. Army Garrison, Martinsville, Va.
Maj. Gen. Benenati is a graduate of the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course, the Military Police Corps Advanced Course, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army War College, and the National Defense University CAPSTONE program.
His civilian education includes a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Richmond and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
Maj. Gen. Benenati’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Iraqi Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
