Col. Timothy E. Newsome was born and raised in Homerville, Ga. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer from the United States Military Academy on May 27th, 1987. He was initially assigned as a rifle platoon leader with 2-87 Infantry, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. He was subsequently assigned as the Higher Headquarters Company executive officer, mortar platoon leader, and battalion S1 of 2-87 Infantry Battalion.
Following graduation from the Infantry Officers’ Advanced Course and the Bradley Commanders’ Course, Col. Newsome served as an assistant brigade S3 in the 2nd Brigade of the 24th Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., for 31 months followed by assignment to 3-15 Infantry as a company commander. After company command, he served as a ground maneuver instructor writer for the Aviation Basic and Advanced Courses at Fort Rucker, Ala.
In 1998, he was assigned to Japan to serve as the chief of operations in the G-3 Shop of the 9th TAACOM/USARJ followed by assignment as the secretary general staff. After graduating from Command and General Staff College in 2001, he served as the battalion operations officer for 1-15 Infantry at Fort Benning, Ga., and as the brigade operations officer for 3rd Brigade, 3rd ID for Operation Iraqi Freedom I.
Upon return from Operation Iraqi Freedom I, he was assigned to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La., where he served as the executive officer for the brigade C2 division and was subsequently assigned as the chief of the live fire division. He commanded 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment from June27th, 2006 to March 11th, 2009. Afterwards, he served for three months as the interim deputy commanding officer of 4th Brigade prior to attending the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. from August 2009 through June 2010. Col. Newsome commanded the 205th Infantry Brigade, First Army Division East at Camp Atterbury Ind., from June 2010 to June 2012. Following that assignment he was assigned as the First Army Division East Deputy Chief of Staff-Operations until Dec. 2013, when he was named as the First Army Division East Chief of Staff.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Achievement Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal 2nd Award; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantryman’s Badge; Expert Infantryman’s Badge; Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab. He holds a Master of Science in Human Resource Management from Troy State University and Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
Col. Newsome’s operational deployments include Sand Eagle ’90 in Northern Florida, REFORGER ’90 in Germany, Bright Star ’93 in Egypt, Operation Desert Spring ’02 in Kuwait, Operation Iraqi Freedom I in 2003, and Operation Iraqi Freedom 07-09.
