Col. Shawn E. Klawunder was commissioned a Lieutenant of Infantry following graduation from West Point in May 1990.

He is a graduate of Ranger, Airborne, Pathfinder and Air Assault Schools, Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College, and the Air War College.

Col. Klawunder’s previous assignments include Rifle Platoon Leader, Mortar Platoon Leader, and HHC Executive Officer, 3-22 Infantry at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Battalion S4, Alpha Company Commander, and HHC Commander, 1-23 Infantry at Fort Lewis, Washington; Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at West Point, New York; Brigade S4 of 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Battalion S3 and Executive Officer of 1-21 Infantry in Kirkuk, Iraq and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Chief of Plans/Exercise Maneuver Control and Deputy Commander of Operations Group at Fort Polk, Louisiana; Deputy Commander of the 192nd Brigade and 3/47 Infantry Battalion Commander at Fort Benning, Georgia; and Deputy Commander of 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division in Heart, Afghanistan.

He participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq from January 2004 to February 2005 and Operation Enduring Freedom from May 2011 to May 2012.

Col. Klawunder’s education includes a Bachelor of Science, USMA, 1990, a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1999, and a Masters in International Relations, Air War College, 2013.

Col. Klawunder’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, NATO Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Ranger Tab, Airborne Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Combat and Expert Infantryman's Badges.
