WEBVTT 00:08.109 --> 00:10.229 Welcome to the Log Stat , the Army's 00:10.229 --> 00:11.896 premier podcast on all things 00:11.896 --> 00:13.840 sustainment , where we analyze new 00:13.840 --> 00:16.062 developments , discuss current trends , 00:16.062 --> 00:18.239 and for the path ahead for the next 00:18.239 --> 00:20.295 generation of sustainment soldiers . 00:27.079 --> 00:28.912 Hello everyone . Welcome back to 00:28.912 --> 00:31.023 another episode of The Log Stat . I'm 00:31.023 --> 00:33.135 your host , Captain Garrett Pyle . So 00:33.135 --> 00:35.190 excited to be coming back to you for 00:35.190 --> 00:37.412 another episode today . And this time , 00:37.412 --> 00:36.950 we'll be looking at a few different 00:36.950 --> 00:39.006 areas . Specifically , first , we're 00:39.006 --> 00:40.506 gonna be looking at direct 00:40.506 --> 00:42.117 commissioning . Now , direct 00:42.117 --> 00:44.283 commissioning , now you might think of 00:44.283 --> 00:46.506 on the doctor's side or lawyer's side , 00:46.506 --> 00:48.506 but maybe if you're out there , you 00:48.506 --> 00:50.450 didn't know , there is some direct 00:50.450 --> 00:50.119 commission opportunities within the 00:50.119 --> 00:52.389 logistics branch . So it's been out for 00:52.389 --> 00:54.389 some time for me kind of talking us 00:54.389 --> 00:56.500 through what those opportunities look 00:56.500 --> 00:58.833 like and then how people can , you know , 00:58.833 --> 01:00.889 get direct commission and what those 01:00.889 --> 01:03.111 fields look like . Additionally , we're 01:03.111 --> 01:05.333 gonna be looking more into data . Now , 01:05.333 --> 01:07.556 as we talked a lot about data because , 01:07.556 --> 01:07.339 you know , it's a growing topic . Data 01:07.339 --> 01:09.519 has always been everywhere , but now 01:09.519 --> 01:11.760 it's the way we're utilizing data and 01:11.760 --> 01:13.816 the capability that it's bringing to 01:13.816 --> 01:15.871 the battlefield for us . So we'll be 01:15.871 --> 01:18.093 looking at how can somebody who's , you 01:18.093 --> 01:20.149 know , become more of a professional 01:20.149 --> 01:22.316 when it comes to data . Can I become a 01:22.316 --> 01:24.149 skill identifier ? Well , that's 01:24.149 --> 01:26.371 actually in the works right now . We're 01:26.371 --> 01:28.593 gonna kind of walking through those who 01:28.593 --> 01:28.190 have shown their expertise within the 01:28.190 --> 01:30.470 data field to be become combat 01:30.470 --> 01:32.470 multipliers for the units that they 01:32.470 --> 01:34.750 serve in . So with me today , I'm gonna 01:34.750 --> 01:36.870 have Kyle Weinarth , who's with the 01:36.870 --> 01:39.037 Logistics proponentency Office , who's 01:39.037 --> 01:41.148 gonna walk us through who's been . In 01:41.148 --> 01:43.480 the field a lot with data as well as 01:43.480 --> 01:45.313 kind of working through Logro on 01:45.313 --> 01:47.536 bringing these innovations to life . So 01:47.536 --> 01:49.480 Kyle , if you can , uh , introduce 01:49.480 --> 01:51.813 yourself for the community today . Yeah , 01:51.813 --> 01:51.680 thanks , Garrett . Uh , happy to be 01:51.680 --> 01:54.110 here . So I'm Captain Kyle Weinerth , 01:54.209 --> 01:57.080 um , military brat . So , but I call 01:57.080 --> 01:59.302 Colorado Springs , Colorado home . Uh , 01:59.302 --> 02:01.413 I commissioned out of Texas Christian 02:01.413 --> 02:03.919 University in 2015 , um , and then went 02:03.919 --> 02:06.160 straight to Ordnance Bullock . Um , and 02:06.160 --> 02:08.104 then kind of back home to Colorado 02:08.104 --> 02:10.438 Springs . I was in 3rd brigade , 4th ID , 02:10.438 --> 02:12.382 um , for my lieutenant times , did 02:12.382 --> 02:15.289 distribution platoon leader , FSCXO in , 02:15.369 --> 02:17.889 in 18 infantry before going to career 02:17.889 --> 02:20.130 course and then ending up in Bilsek , 02:20.199 --> 02:23.970 Germany , um , as a over in 2CR , um , 02:24.089 --> 02:26.311 so I did a little bit of S3 time in the 02:26.311 --> 02:29.660 RSS and then I was the 3rd , 3rd 02:29.660 --> 02:32.070 squadron FST commander there for about 02:32.070 --> 02:34.589 2 years . Um , Following that , I was 02:34.589 --> 02:37.580 selected to go to the CASCO VCU program , 02:37.929 --> 02:40.040 spent a year there , and that's how I 02:40.040 --> 02:42.040 ended up back here at CASCO . I was 02:42.040 --> 02:44.710 ariCC instructor for a year , and now 02:44.710 --> 02:46.654 I've spent about 1 year and a half 02:46.654 --> 02:49.710 years in Lopro . Awesome . So that's 02:49.710 --> 02:51.877 where you kind of got your , your data 02:51.877 --> 02:54.190 background when it comes to VCU , um , 02:54.309 --> 02:56.420 so once again , anyone out there , go 02:56.420 --> 02:58.531 back and check out the VCU episode we 02:58.531 --> 03:00.420 did almost a year ago now when it 03:00.420 --> 03:02.309 published , but give you a little 03:02.309 --> 03:04.309 insight on what that program has to 03:04.309 --> 03:06.531 offer and why , especially those , uh , 03:06.531 --> 03:08.642 those junior captains out there , why 03:08.642 --> 03:10.865 you should take advantage of that . But 03:10.865 --> 03:10.669 for today's conversation , of course , 03:10.910 --> 03:13.132 let's first kick this off when it comes 03:13.132 --> 03:15.132 to direct commissioning . Um , as I 03:15.132 --> 03:17.354 alluded to , like , when you thought of 03:17.354 --> 03:19.466 direct commissioning , I was always , 03:19.466 --> 03:21.743 OK , doctors or lawyers was , you know , 03:21.743 --> 03:23.854 those who direct commission . But now 03:23.854 --> 03:26.021 we're talking about today that there's 03:26.021 --> 03:28.132 other opportunities now for logistics 03:28.132 --> 03:30.188 side . Can , can you kind of walk us 03:30.188 --> 03:32.354 through what those opportunities are ? 03:32.354 --> 03:34.410 Right , absolutely . And so , yeah , 03:34.410 --> 03:36.632 previously , um , very focused on the , 03:36.699 --> 03:39.490 the niche expertise , expertises across 03:39.490 --> 03:41.546 the military and And like you said , 03:41.546 --> 03:43.712 lawyers and doctors , like , those are 03:43.712 --> 03:45.990 the primary ones that we think of . Um , 03:46.089 --> 03:48.145 the logistics branch does have niche 03:48.145 --> 03:51.270 areas , as we all know . Um , so right 03:51.270 --> 03:53.869 now , uh , since 2022 we've identified 03:53.869 --> 03:56.330 four areas of expertise that we're 03:56.330 --> 03:59.089 looking to direct commission , um , you 03:59.089 --> 04:01.145 know , people from either that are . 04:01.500 --> 04:04.020 Already active duty but maybe warrants 04:04.020 --> 04:06.740 or enlisted service members or just 04:06.740 --> 04:09.899 from industry civilians to direct 04:09.899 --> 04:12.059 commission them into the logistics 04:12.059 --> 04:14.580 branches officers . So those four areas 04:14.580 --> 04:17.549 are functional data analysts , um , 04:17.980 --> 04:20.100 port officers , port operations 04:20.100 --> 04:22.630 officers , rail officers , and then 04:22.630 --> 04:26.559 petroleum officers . And so the 04:26.700 --> 04:28.811 functional data analysts , that's our 04:28.811 --> 04:32.049 only compo one . Available um area and 04:32.049 --> 04:34.216 then the other three are all compo 3 , 04:34.216 --> 04:36.382 so Army reserves that we're looking to 04:36.382 --> 04:38.660 direct commissioned officers into . OK , 04:38.660 --> 04:40.882 and you said this has been since 2022 . 04:40.882 --> 04:44.500 Yes , yes , OK , um , why did the army 04:44.500 --> 04:46.444 kind of like choose like why these 04:46.444 --> 04:49.429 specific areas then , right , so , um , 04:49.500 --> 04:51.980 the CSCO CG decides on areas of 04:51.980 --> 04:55.540 expertise that we are lacking , um , as 04:55.540 --> 04:57.262 a sustainment branch or as the 04:57.262 --> 04:59.420 logistics branch , and so . Based off 04:59.420 --> 05:01.587 conversations and we , we relook every 05:01.587 --> 05:03.642 year annually as we update our , our 05:03.642 --> 05:07.089 guidance , um , to submit up to UAE , 05:07.839 --> 05:10.609 um . Those are the areas that we've 05:10.609 --> 05:12.720 determined like , hey , we don't have 05:12.880 --> 05:16.690 as as much expertise in these areas and 05:16.690 --> 05:18.801 so that's where we're looking to pull 05:18.801 --> 05:20.912 from industry so that we can continue 05:20.912 --> 05:23.023 to build kind of that talent pool and 05:23.023 --> 05:25.190 talent base um and fill these critical 05:25.190 --> 05:27.720 positions . OK , so you said we got one 05:27.720 --> 05:29.942 for couple on the functional analysis , 05:29.942 --> 05:32.053 and the other ones are in the reserve 05:32.053 --> 05:34.164 reserve side , right ? OK , um , what 05:34.164 --> 05:35.831 have we seen so far like with 05:35.831 --> 05:37.831 individuals are individuals already 05:37.831 --> 05:39.831 been direct commissioned into these 05:39.831 --> 05:41.998 areas ? Yeah , so we've , we've direct 05:41.998 --> 05:44.164 commissioned a handful , um , probably 05:44.164 --> 05:45.887 around 12 at this point . Um , 05:45.887 --> 05:48.109 currently we have 2 functional analysts 05:48.109 --> 05:50.276 that are working at CSCcom right now . 05:50.276 --> 05:52.276 We have another one who's currently 05:52.276 --> 05:54.442 going through the , the PME required . 05:54.442 --> 05:56.498 Um , there's essentially a bullock A 05:56.498 --> 05:58.442 you have to go to before you go to 05:58.442 --> 06:00.720 Bullock B , which is logistics bullock . 06:00.809 --> 06:03.031 Um , so he's actually down in Bullock A 06:03.031 --> 06:05.198 right now . Then we've got another one 06:05.198 --> 06:07.087 of the functional analysts in the 06:07.087 --> 06:09.190 pipeline to go in August , um . So 06:09.369 --> 06:11.480 we're not getting like a massive wave 06:11.480 --> 06:13.313 of individuals , but it's a slow 06:13.313 --> 06:15.619 rolling , you know , uh , kind of 06:15.619 --> 06:17.929 process so far . OK , are these coming 06:17.929 --> 06:20.262 from industry so far or within the army ? 06:20.399 --> 06:23.049 Um , so the majority of them are coming 06:23.049 --> 06:25.850 from industry . Um , it , it , it's 06:25.850 --> 06:28.128 kind of hit and miss , not hit or miss , 06:28.128 --> 06:30.929 but about 50 , 50/50 . Um , there's a 06:30.929 --> 06:33.040 couple that have come from industry , 06:33.040 --> 06:35.369 then we've got a couple who are , are 06:35.369 --> 06:37.609 GS civilians who are then . You know , 06:37.730 --> 06:39.952 working in these types of jobs and then 06:39.952 --> 06:41.730 wanting to direct commission as 06:41.730 --> 06:43.452 officers because they have the 06:43.452 --> 06:45.452 expertise , you know , they've been 06:45.452 --> 06:47.452 working with directly with military 06:47.452 --> 06:49.674 members in these types of positions and 06:49.674 --> 06:52.079 so they are qualified to then direct 06:52.079 --> 06:55.690 commission as officers . OK , so , and 06:55.690 --> 06:57.579 you said you got some down in the 06:57.579 --> 06:59.412 Bullock now , so they have to do 06:59.690 --> 07:01.634 Bullock , they have to do a career 07:01.634 --> 07:03.468 course that as well . So it , it 07:03.468 --> 07:06.339 depends on when you . What grade you 07:06.339 --> 07:08.640 enter in as a direct commission . So 07:09.100 --> 07:12.579 part of what we provide to UAE , who is 07:12.579 --> 07:14.301 now responsible for the direct 07:14.301 --> 07:16.135 commission program , is a set of 07:16.135 --> 07:18.079 constructive credit , constructive 07:18.079 --> 07:20.540 service credit guidelines , um , and so 07:20.540 --> 07:23.519 that's basically what the CSCO CG 07:24.140 --> 07:26.779 authorizes as the credit that we can 07:26.779 --> 07:28.779 provide to individuals , and that's 07:28.779 --> 07:31.112 based off of their education . You know , 07:31.112 --> 07:33.335 any professional certificates that they 07:33.335 --> 07:35.339 have , as well as um the work 07:35.339 --> 07:37.450 experience that they might have . And 07:37.450 --> 07:39.450 so , we grade all of that out , you 07:39.450 --> 07:41.506 know , you calculate it up , do some 07:41.506 --> 07:43.880 basic math , and then that spits out 07:43.980 --> 07:45.869 how much time and service they're 07:45.869 --> 07:47.540 awarded . Um , so logistics 07:47.540 --> 07:49.596 specifically , right now , we're not 07:49.596 --> 07:51.651 looking to direct commission anybody 07:51.651 --> 07:54.059 who doesn't grade out as a captain , um , 07:54.380 --> 07:56.491 but you could grade out , in theory , 07:56.491 --> 07:59.760 all the way up to 06 . Um , so , you 07:59.760 --> 08:02.350 know , you've got somebody who's been a 08:02.350 --> 08:05.000 CEO of some big , you know , data 08:05.000 --> 08:07.167 company , let's say , um , they've got 08:07.167 --> 08:09.600 PhDs , and they're , they're maxing out 08:09.600 --> 08:11.656 all the service credits , they could 08:11.656 --> 08:13.549 come in as a 06 , um , and so , 08:14.029 --> 08:16.279 depending on where you enter in , grade 08:16.279 --> 08:18.223 out as , so let's call it captains 08:18.223 --> 08:20.223 because that's primarily what we've 08:20.223 --> 08:22.390 direct commissioned so far . They do , 08:22.390 --> 08:24.557 they have to complete all the PME that 08:24.557 --> 08:26.557 they've essentially missed , and so 08:26.557 --> 08:28.790 they . They do their DA 71 , their oath 08:28.790 --> 08:31.012 of office , raise their hand , and then 08:31.012 --> 08:33.346 they go to the direct commission course , 08:33.700 --> 08:35.630 which is bullock A , and that's 08:35.630 --> 08:37.890 currently down at , at Fort Benning . 08:38.109 --> 08:40.276 Um , it's a six-week course , and then 08:40.276 --> 08:42.549 we send them from there to the first 08:42.549 --> 08:45.130 available , um , log bullock date . 08:45.349 --> 08:47.405 They come here , do the , you know , 08:47.405 --> 08:49.682 the fifteen-ish weeks logistics bullet , 08:49.900 --> 08:52.640 and then . We will then slot them into 08:52.640 --> 08:55.349 the next available CCCC class . Um , so 08:55.349 --> 08:57.460 really they spend their roughly their 08:57.460 --> 08:59.349 first year of service , um , just 08:59.349 --> 09:01.770 knocking out PME because they're 90 09:01.770 --> 09:03.830 alpha officers , right ? Um , so we 09:03.830 --> 09:06.052 have to make sure that they're educated 09:06.052 --> 09:08.274 as such , um , even if they're going to 09:08.274 --> 09:10.386 be these niche functional analysts or 09:10.386 --> 09:12.386 rail petroleum officers , they're , 09:12.386 --> 09:14.552 they're still going to have a 90 alpha 09:14.552 --> 09:18.270 next to their AOC on their STP . So the 09:18.270 --> 09:20.381 expectation is that they're able to . 09:20.381 --> 09:22.869 Fill any 90 alpha role , not just as a 09:22.869 --> 09:24.980 data analyst , but potentially as a , 09:24.989 --> 09:27.100 you know , FSC commander or a SO in a 09:27.100 --> 09:30.190 BSB , um , so that's why PME is 09:30.190 --> 09:32.301 important and making sure that they , 09:32.301 --> 09:34.301 they knock it out right up front is 09:34.301 --> 09:36.357 important to us . OK , now , is that 09:36.357 --> 09:38.523 like the , the OCS course they kind of 09:38.523 --> 09:40.690 go through then ? Yeah , just not as , 09:40.690 --> 09:42.801 um , in depth , right ? So it's all , 09:42.801 --> 09:45.390 it's only 6 weeks , um , and they kind 09:45.390 --> 09:47.549 of just learn , you know , the basics 09:47.549 --> 09:49.830 of . Of being an officer and being , 09:49.840 --> 09:52.250 being in the army . Some are military 09:52.250 --> 09:54.361 and they've already know , you know , 09:54.361 --> 09:56.694 the , the rank structure and , you know , 09:56.694 --> 09:58.861 units and some graphics , but some are 09:58.861 --> 10:00.806 like , like I said , we're pulling 10:00.806 --> 10:02.917 straight from industry , so they're , 10:02.917 --> 10:02.849 they're a blank slate , you know , 10:02.969 --> 10:05.849 they're your MS-1 showing up to an ROTC 10:05.849 --> 10:09.210 unit , um , so . It's just 6 weeks of a 10:09.210 --> 10:11.210 crash course of like , here's how , 10:11.359 --> 10:13.415 here's how to be an officer , here's 10:13.415 --> 10:15.415 how the army . OK , now you said it 10:15.415 --> 10:17.637 could be somebody who's like a CEO of a 10:17.637 --> 10:19.526 company , so is there like an age 10:19.526 --> 10:21.692 restriction or like , how old are we , 10:21.692 --> 10:23.915 how old are we talking here ? So that's 10:23.915 --> 10:26.200 kind of the um . That's one of the , 10:26.700 --> 10:29.299 the good parts of the direct commission 10:29.299 --> 10:32.059 process , um , is that the age 10:32.059 --> 10:35.539 restriction isn't as stringent as , 10:35.940 --> 10:38.859 uh , like OCS's age restriction . So if 10:38.859 --> 10:41.140 we've identified talent that we would 10:41.140 --> 10:43.090 like to integrate in the direct 10:43.090 --> 10:45.257 commission process , we're able to get 10:45.257 --> 10:48.210 them in regardless of , of age , um , 10:48.590 --> 10:50.701 just because they have expertise that 10:50.701 --> 10:53.090 we , that we want to utilize , OK . Now 10:53.090 --> 10:55.257 you're talking about , you know , um , 10:55.257 --> 10:57.590 grading out and which rank they come in . 10:57.590 --> 10:59.757 So you talked about anywhere from like 10:59.757 --> 10:59.690 a captain . So is the captain the 10:59.690 --> 11:01.830 minimum they'll be able to come in as 11:01.830 --> 11:03.929 for logistics branch . So other 11:03.929 --> 11:05.985 branches have different constructive 11:05.985 --> 11:08.609 service credit requirements , um , and 11:08.609 --> 11:10.720 some of them may allow individuals to 11:10.720 --> 11:12.776 come in as a 2nd lieutenant or a 1st 11:12.776 --> 11:16.049 lieutenant , um , but because of the 11:16.049 --> 11:18.271 areas of expertise that we want and the 11:18.271 --> 11:20.271 billets that we have identified for 11:20.271 --> 11:22.493 these individuals to fill . They're all 11:22.493 --> 11:25.770 three level billets , so getting a 2nd 11:25.770 --> 11:27.840 lieutenant in , um , or somebody who 11:27.840 --> 11:30.109 grades out as a 2nd lieutenant , we 11:30.109 --> 11:32.080 don't deem would benefit us , um , 11:32.280 --> 11:34.391 because really that's showing us that 11:34.391 --> 11:36.558 they don't have the level of expertise 11:36.558 --> 11:38.280 that we want for those , those 11:38.280 --> 11:40.391 positions , OK , with the Max being , 11:40.391 --> 11:42.919 uh , 06 colonel , correct , yeah , well , 11:42.960 --> 11:45.182 I just the , uh , the span of knowledge 11:45.599 --> 11:47.599 there what that , what we could get 11:47.599 --> 11:49.432 through the direct commissioning 11:49.432 --> 11:51.599 program . Um , another thing , so they 11:51.599 --> 11:53.710 go through , they get selected , they 11:53.710 --> 11:55.821 were coming in that they're , they're 11:55.821 --> 11:58.155 doing their PME , um . Once they commit , 11:58.155 --> 12:00.266 finish that PME you said so that they 12:00.266 --> 12:02.099 can , even though they're direct 12:02.099 --> 12:04.321 commissioning with the data side of the 12:04.321 --> 12:04.219 house , they could still fill different 12:04.219 --> 12:06.900 roles then yeah , typically we have 12:06.900 --> 12:09.859 them once they finish PME , um , we 12:09.859 --> 12:11.780 have them go straight into the 12:11.780 --> 12:14.530 positions that they were acquired for , 12:14.739 --> 12:16.850 right , so . If they're in one of the 12:16.850 --> 12:19.799 compo 3 positions , we send them off to 12:19.799 --> 12:21.630 um typically a unit that we've 12:21.809 --> 12:24.169 previously coordinated with for them to 12:24.169 --> 12:26.609 go and fill , and then if they're the 12:26.609 --> 12:30.549 compo 1 here at CScom um up in Tid , 12:31.210 --> 12:34.039 there is a under the business systems , 12:34.530 --> 12:37.330 there is a group of officers who do 12:37.330 --> 12:39.274 data , the functional data analyst 12:39.274 --> 12:41.386 roles , and they typically slate slot 12:41.386 --> 12:43.441 into there for their kind of initial 12:43.441 --> 12:45.497 first couple of years . OK . The one 12:45.497 --> 12:47.497 thing you you mentioned , like when 12:47.497 --> 12:49.719 you're doing this calculations on where 12:49.719 --> 12:51.886 they're gonna come at , does that give 12:51.886 --> 12:53.941 them like . I wanna say like time in 12:53.941 --> 12:56.108 service that you're like do they say I 12:56.108 --> 12:58.163 come in as a captain , but I already 12:58.163 --> 13:00.386 get 4 years of service credited already 13:00.386 --> 13:02.552 like or or they come as a captain with 13:02.552 --> 13:04.774 no years of service correct . They , so 13:04.774 --> 13:08.539 they come in as a captain with no years 13:08.539 --> 13:10.840 of service in terms of like reaching 13:10.840 --> 13:13.007 retirement age or anything like that , 13:13.260 --> 13:15.619 yeah , so they , they just grade out at 13:15.619 --> 13:18.010 a certain level , but in terms of like 13:18.010 --> 13:20.343 time in service , they're not receiving . 13:20.599 --> 13:22.549 Any time in service , OK , because 13:22.549 --> 13:24.549 that's always be a question because 13:24.549 --> 13:26.771 when it comes to pay , is this how that 13:26.771 --> 13:28.660 the pay chart all works for these 13:28.660 --> 13:30.880 individuals , right ? OK , um , so I 13:30.880 --> 13:32.991 guess you know starting order you can 13:32.991 --> 13:35.047 definitely cap out then before you , 13:35.047 --> 13:37.158 before you're eligible for retirement 13:37.158 --> 13:39.269 then , or , yeah , potentially , OK , 13:39.269 --> 13:41.900 OK , um . So the army's identified that 13:41.900 --> 13:44.510 this is a need from this program being 13:44.510 --> 13:47.590 out since 2022 . What has the army seen 13:47.590 --> 13:49.757 so far with these individuals who have 13:49.757 --> 13:51.757 direct commission , like how , like 13:51.757 --> 13:53.590 with the capability that they're 13:53.590 --> 13:55.923 bringing to the force , right ? So , it , 13:55.923 --> 13:58.034 and I'll specifically reference our , 13:58.034 --> 14:00.090 our functional data analysts because 14:00.090 --> 14:02.034 that's what I've seen , you know , 14:02.034 --> 14:04.201 direct impact in , but the two that we 14:04.201 --> 14:07.150 have working up at TI have been just an 14:07.150 --> 14:10.390 insane benefit to . The sustainment 14:10.390 --> 14:12.612 community and what we're trying to do , 14:12.612 --> 14:14.723 um , they're really the , the driving 14:14.723 --> 14:17.679 force behind , um , the , the C 14:17.679 --> 14:21.020 dashboard that was created , um , and 14:21.559 --> 14:23.789 really without them , without acquiring 14:23.789 --> 14:26.520 that expertise , I'm not sure that we 14:26.520 --> 14:28.687 would have been able to create that in 14:28.687 --> 14:30.919 the same manner that it is and has been 14:30.919 --> 14:33.119 deployed , you know , across the force 14:33.119 --> 14:36.130 today . So , awesome . Now , do you 14:36.130 --> 14:38.297 foresee any other direct commissioning 14:38.297 --> 14:41.150 opportunities in the future ? Um , you 14:41.150 --> 14:43.510 know , potentially right now , I don't 14:43.510 --> 14:45.343 think we're looking to widen the 14:45.343 --> 14:48.789 aperture too much , um , but I think 14:49.489 --> 14:51.711 You know , the army is a never evolving 14:51.711 --> 14:54.770 kind of beast , and as the world 14:54.770 --> 14:56.969 changed and as the logistics and 14:56.969 --> 14:59.025 sustainment enterprise changes , you 14:59.025 --> 15:01.025 know , we could identify a need and 15:01.025 --> 15:03.136 immediately just be like , we need to 15:03.136 --> 15:05.413 start looking for these experts across , 15:05.413 --> 15:07.969 you know , across America , across the 15:07.969 --> 15:10.210 force and across , uh , enterprise in 15:10.210 --> 15:12.609 general . OK , so for someone who's out 15:12.609 --> 15:14.831 there listening to this right now . I'm 15:14.831 --> 15:16.942 gonna be like , hey , I know somebody 15:16.942 --> 15:18.942 who's in the industry who could fit 15:18.942 --> 15:18.909 this billet , or maybe somebody's out 15:18.909 --> 15:21.242 there listening to themselves like , ah , 15:21.242 --> 15:21.070 this sounds like something I could be , 15:21.190 --> 15:23.190 you know , get myself involved in . 15:23.190 --> 15:25.190 What does the process look like for 15:25.190 --> 15:27.134 them to get direct , you know , we 15:27.134 --> 15:26.950 talked about the education piece , but 15:26.950 --> 15:29.659 like how do they apply , um , like what 15:29.659 --> 15:31.881 makes it good and bad , kind of like we 15:31.881 --> 15:34.048 always say packet , but what does that 15:34.048 --> 15:36.270 look like ? Yeah , so reaching out to , 15:36.270 --> 15:39.669 um , the logro dis distro inbox 15:39.669 --> 15:42.002 essentially , um , is a good first step , 15:42.002 --> 15:44.200 and then the program manager . Who's 15:44.200 --> 15:46.422 currently myself or in the future , you 15:46.422 --> 15:48.756 know , my transition to another officer , 15:48.756 --> 15:50.978 but the right person will see your kind 15:50.978 --> 15:53.089 of inquiry . Um , and so that's where 15:53.089 --> 15:55.311 you'll be able to provide , this is who 15:55.311 --> 15:57.533 I am , I heard about this episode , and 15:57.533 --> 16:00.450 I'm looking to , to direct commission . 16:00.530 --> 16:02.141 Can you provide me with more 16:02.141 --> 16:04.363 information ? Um , and we can certainly 16:04.363 --> 16:06.308 help to direct you in the , in the 16:06.308 --> 16:09.070 right path . Um , recently , since 16:09.450 --> 16:11.770 October 2025 , so starting in fiscal 16:11.770 --> 16:15.619 year 206 . Um , the recruiting 16:15.619 --> 16:18.580 command essentially has taken control 16:18.580 --> 16:21.159 of the army's direct commission program , 16:21.919 --> 16:24.260 um , and so it used to just be 16:24.260 --> 16:26.149 proponent driven , so each , each 16:26.149 --> 16:28.093 branch , each center of excellence 16:28.093 --> 16:31.460 drove the entire process , um , but now 16:31.460 --> 16:33.460 it's been centralized , and so that 16:33.460 --> 16:36.260 doesn't mean that us as logro are out 16:36.260 --> 16:38.316 of the equation . It just means that 16:38.316 --> 16:41.340 we're now , um , kind of a big piece , 16:41.380 --> 16:44.400 a big voice in the equation . Um , so , 16:45.099 --> 16:47.321 basically we provide those constructive 16:47.321 --> 16:49.543 credit guidelines like I talked about , 16:49.543 --> 16:51.266 but also we provide our branch 16:51.266 --> 16:53.377 recommendation or the , the Center of 16:53.377 --> 16:55.739 Excellence's recommendation for each 16:55.739 --> 16:59.099 candidate , um , and so we provide that 16:59.099 --> 17:01.859 back to UErec and then they board 17:01.859 --> 17:03.970 applicants and so if you reach out to 17:03.970 --> 17:06.900 us , we'll be able to kind of vet you 17:06.900 --> 17:08.900 as a candidate , tell you if you're 17:08.900 --> 17:10.956 competitive or not , and then direct 17:10.956 --> 17:12.567 you to . The the user direct 17:12.567 --> 17:14.819 commissioning website where they have 17:14.819 --> 17:16.930 the entire process to actually submit 17:16.930 --> 17:18.910 your packet . OK , so it's not 17:18.910 --> 17:21.077 restricted . I know some army programs 17:21.077 --> 17:23.354 are like , there's a time , time where , 17:23.354 --> 17:25.466 hey , this is what applications would 17:25.466 --> 17:27.632 do . This is just open all year long . 17:27.632 --> 17:27.109 Yeah , they have rolling boards . I 17:27.109 --> 17:29.331 think they try and hold one about every 17:29.331 --> 17:31.709 quarter . Um , so , as you submit your 17:31.709 --> 17:33.820 packet and your , your packet's being 17:33.820 --> 17:35.987 processed , at the same time , they'll 17:35.987 --> 17:37.820 have you start going through the 17:37.820 --> 17:40.469 medical process , um , so to make sure 17:40.469 --> 17:42.802 that you're medically sound to serve as , 17:42.802 --> 17:44.858 you know , serving in the army as an 17:44.858 --> 17:46.636 officer . Um , and then they'll 17:46.636 --> 17:48.699 actually board your file once you're 17:48.699 --> 17:50.921 complete and you have the , the medical 17:50.921 --> 17:53.143 approval , um , they'll board your file 17:53.143 --> 17:55.540 to see if you qualify , and they want 17:55.540 --> 17:57.651 you to , to , to direct commission as 17:57.651 --> 18:00.300 an officer . OK , now , um , of course , 18:00.459 --> 18:02.792 before we get into the , the , you know , 18:02.792 --> 18:04.959 the second part of this conversation , 18:04.959 --> 18:06.959 um , this process is still the same 18:06.959 --> 18:09.689 between compo one and combo two , and 18:09.689 --> 18:11.967 compo , yeah , compo , sorry , combo 3 , 18:11.967 --> 18:14.069 my mistake . Yeah , so same , same 18:14.069 --> 18:16.910 process in terms of , you know , we vet 18:16.910 --> 18:19.030 your packets , we provide a , a , a 18:19.030 --> 18:21.589 thumbs up , um , and then even through 18:21.589 --> 18:23.989 the , the use of rec is you submit your 18:23.989 --> 18:26.280 packet . It's just for , you're 18:26.280 --> 18:28.280 submitting it for kind of the , the 18:28.280 --> 18:30.336 different areas of expertise that we 18:30.336 --> 18:32.447 have , um , you'll submit your packet 18:32.447 --> 18:34.630 and say , I'm a petroleum officer , or 18:34.630 --> 18:36.797 I'm submitting for a petroleum officer 18:36.797 --> 18:39.019 or I'm submitting for , you know , data 18:39.019 --> 18:41.880 analyst . OK , um , with all these , 18:41.959 --> 18:44.237 you know , you talked about , you know , 18:44.237 --> 18:46.459 when it comes to education experience , 18:46.459 --> 18:48.515 is there anything specific that sets 18:48.515 --> 18:50.737 people apart who are out there saying , 18:50.737 --> 18:50.560 OK , I think this will be a really good , 18:50.880 --> 18:52.920 uh , opportunity for me . Is there 18:52.920 --> 18:54.976 something that sets people apart for 18:54.976 --> 18:57.198 this type of , uh , experience ? Yeah , 18:57.198 --> 18:59.420 I think , uh , specifically it's having 18:59.420 --> 19:03.390 the right . Types of education and the 19:03.390 --> 19:05.869 right types of civilian experience and 19:05.869 --> 19:08.430 so , um , if you reach out to our inbox , 19:08.469 --> 19:10.989 we're able to provide you with kind of 19:10.989 --> 19:12.656 the , the constructive credit 19:12.656 --> 19:14.878 guidelines , um , so that you can , you 19:14.878 --> 19:17.349 know , do your own unofficial , OK , I 19:17.349 --> 19:19.571 think I would grade out as , you know , 19:19.571 --> 19:21.738 this based off what I have , but we do 19:21.738 --> 19:24.390 outline these types of degrees qualify 19:24.390 --> 19:26.609 for , you know , master's level 19:26.709 --> 19:28.765 constructive credit . These types of 19:28.765 --> 19:31.369 PhDs would qualify for . Um , you know , 19:31.520 --> 19:33.742 PhD level constructive credit . I think 19:33.742 --> 19:36.719 that's another key piece is the only 19:36.719 --> 19:38.689 education level of education that 19:38.689 --> 19:41.729 qualifies you for credit is master's 19:41.729 --> 19:43.599 degree and above , right ? Um , 19:43.670 --> 19:45.503 bachelor's degree is the minimum 19:45.503 --> 19:47.614 required , right ? You have to have a 19:47.614 --> 19:49.892 bachelor's degree to become an officer , 19:49.892 --> 19:51.837 but in order to get any additional 19:51.837 --> 19:53.837 service credit , you have to have a 19:53.837 --> 19:56.003 master's . Um , for us to give you any 19:56.003 --> 19:57.948 more service credit makes complete 19:57.948 --> 19:59.892 sense if we're looking for someone 19:59.892 --> 20:01.948 who's specialized in this field , we 20:01.948 --> 20:03.837 want somebody who's actually went 20:03.837 --> 20:03.540 through more higher education , got 20:03.540 --> 20:05.540 more of those years of experience . 20:05.709 --> 20:07.709 That's the whole intent behind this 20:07.709 --> 20:10.670 program , yeah . So , um , so before we , 20:10.739 --> 20:12.949 you know , get into more of the , the 20:12.949 --> 20:14.616 skill identifier side of this 20:14.616 --> 20:16.616 conversation , is there anything we 20:16.616 --> 20:18.838 missed that you wanna highlight for the 20:18.838 --> 20:20.727 community when it comes to direct 20:20.727 --> 20:22.949 commissioning ? No , I , I think it's a 20:22.949 --> 20:25.060 great opportunity . Um , so if you've 20:25.060 --> 20:27.227 got individuals , you know , if you're 20:27.227 --> 20:29.393 working with whether it's GS employees 20:29.393 --> 20:31.930 that are doing . You know , they have 20:31.930 --> 20:34.170 jobs in these areas of expertise , um , 20:34.209 --> 20:36.431 or you know some a friend or somebody , 20:36.431 --> 20:38.969 um , who's working in the industry who 20:38.969 --> 20:41.479 has these , these areas of expertise , 20:41.810 --> 20:43.588 um , and are looking to serve , 20:43.588 --> 20:46.790 definitely guide them to us , um , 20:46.930 --> 20:49.589 because we need these officers and , 20:50.010 --> 20:52.449 and the direct commissioning program is 20:52.449 --> 20:54.505 a good avenue to get them integrated 20:54.505 --> 20:57.930 into the force , um , as expediently as 20:57.930 --> 21:00.459 possible . Awesome . And we'll just 21:00.459 --> 21:02.626 hopefully , and we'll include that all 21:02.626 --> 21:04.681 on the show notes . So , of course , 21:04.681 --> 21:06.848 links to the logistics Proy office for 21:06.848 --> 21:08.903 you . So easy reference , you can be 21:08.903 --> 21:11.015 able to get into the show notes , get 21:11.015 --> 21:13.126 those links so that you can reach out 21:13.126 --> 21:12.339 to the team here to be able to get 21:12.339 --> 21:14.506 plugged in and I know they'll be happy 21:14.506 --> 21:16.719 to answer any of your questions . And 21:16.719 --> 21:18.886 then as we move forward , and I allude 21:18.886 --> 21:20.775 to the beginning , um , data , of 21:20.775 --> 21:22.997 course , is everywhere . We've talked a 21:22.997 --> 21:25.052 lot about data on this podcast , but 21:25.052 --> 21:27.163 now it's like the army is starting to 21:27.163 --> 21:29.163 identify expertise when it comes to 21:29.163 --> 21:30.941 data . Uh , we always see skill 21:30.941 --> 21:33.119 identifiers is a way to bring a , as a 21:33.119 --> 21:35.175 combat multiplier to a unit that you 21:35.175 --> 21:37.063 serve in . So you kind of walk us 21:37.063 --> 21:39.239 through the way the army is looking to 21:39.239 --> 21:42.760 recognize data expertise now , right ? 21:42.849 --> 21:46.609 And so I think like you said , We 21:46.609 --> 21:49.959 talk data like data has been the hot , 21:50.420 --> 21:52.420 hot ticket item for a while now and 21:52.420 --> 21:54.587 oftentimes we're talking about what we 21:54.587 --> 21:56.642 can do with data and how we're gonna 21:56.642 --> 21:58.920 transform like predictive logistics is , 21:58.920 --> 22:01.031 is such a , you know , buzzword right 22:01.031 --> 22:03.031 now , especially in the sustainment 22:03.031 --> 22:05.031 community . Um , but a lot of times 22:05.031 --> 22:07.198 we're not talking about the who behind 22:07.198 --> 22:09.253 that , right ? Like , who's actually 22:09.253 --> 22:11.364 the ones that are driving this , um , 22:11.364 --> 22:13.587 and how are we . How are we identifying 22:13.587 --> 22:16.599 and qualifying these individuals within 22:16.599 --> 22:19.699 our organizations , um , and so that's 22:20.000 --> 22:22.280 what the sustainment functional or 22:22.280 --> 22:24.920 logistics functional data analyst is 22:24.920 --> 22:28.579 striving to do is to really , really 22:28.579 --> 22:31.160 institutionalize a process to identify 22:31.160 --> 22:33.770 this talent . And talent manage , you 22:33.770 --> 22:35.937 know , these officers moving forward . 22:35.937 --> 22:38.048 OK , so for confirmation , that's the 22:38.048 --> 22:40.489 sustainment functional data analysis or 22:40.489 --> 22:42.880 analyst . Yes . So that's what the new 22:42.880 --> 22:45.213 skill identifier , yes , is going to be . 22:45.213 --> 22:47.849 And what's the code for that ? It'll be 22:47.849 --> 22:49.849 Lima 9 will be the skill identifier 22:49.849 --> 22:52.500 code . Um , for the sustainment 22:52.500 --> 22:54.500 function that analyst , OK , and of 22:54.500 --> 22:56.667 course I know this is all still within 22:56.667 --> 22:58.722 the works getting through , um , all 22:58.722 --> 23:00.778 the whole process to make this , you 23:00.778 --> 23:03.000 know , fully bring it to life , right , 23:03.000 --> 23:02.859 um , so we kind of talked about the 23:02.859 --> 23:05.939 reason behind it , but once this 23:05.939 --> 23:07.883 process goes through , I have this 23:07.883 --> 23:10.050 skill identifier . What really is that 23:10.050 --> 23:11.995 showing to the units that I'm in , 23:11.995 --> 23:14.250 right ? So I've , we just talked about 23:14.260 --> 23:16.579 kind of a good example with , with the 23:16.579 --> 23:19.020 direct commissioning program , but Um , 23:19.250 --> 23:20.917 the , the basis of this skill 23:20.917 --> 23:24.050 identifier is to move away from this ad 23:24.050 --> 23:27.329 hoc process of , you know , 23:27.410 --> 23:29.880 identifying data talent , right ? So , 23:30.209 --> 23:32.209 you know , in the past we're either 23:32.209 --> 23:34.209 direct commissioning individuals or 23:34.209 --> 23:36.431 really , uh , many of you have probably 23:36.431 --> 23:38.542 seen it in your organizations , and I 23:38.542 --> 23:40.487 know we saw it in Captain's career 23:40.487 --> 23:42.598 course , right , where like , There's 23:42.598 --> 23:44.820 one guy , like there's , there's data , 23:44.820 --> 23:46.931 there's Data Dave , right , who , and 23:46.931 --> 23:46.510 he's the , he's the guy that knows how 23:46.510 --> 23:48.621 to do data . He's the guy we're gonna 23:48.621 --> 23:50.030 rely on , but that's all 23:50.030 --> 23:52.141 self-identifying and self-promotion , 23:52.141 --> 23:54.319 right ? So that's an officer coming in 23:54.670 --> 23:56.670 saying , hey , I , I know how to do 23:56.670 --> 23:58.726 this stuff . I can do the cool Excel 23:58.726 --> 24:00.781 stuff nowadays it's , you know , the 24:00.781 --> 24:03.060 Power BI type stuff , um , but that's 24:03.060 --> 24:05.890 all very ad hoc and so we're looking to 24:05.890 --> 24:07.668 institutionalize this , right , 24:07.668 --> 24:10.290 formalize a path where we can create . 24:10.650 --> 24:12.770 Individuals who are data savvy , who 24:12.770 --> 24:15.489 have , you know , data competency , and 24:15.489 --> 24:19.209 then also be for units to identify them , 24:19.630 --> 24:22.170 position them correctly , um , and then , 24:22.290 --> 24:24.068 you know , the continued talent 24:24.068 --> 24:26.449 management of it . Nice . So , that 24:26.449 --> 24:28.616 this course is , it's continuing to go 24:28.616 --> 24:30.727 through the approval process . How is 24:30.727 --> 24:32.393 one be able to get this skill 24:32.393 --> 24:34.550 identifier then ? Yeah , so the skill 24:34.550 --> 24:38.339 identifier will be eligible to award 24:38.339 --> 24:41.270 hopefully here come August time frame . 24:41.390 --> 24:44.160 Um , we are currently sitting with 24:44.430 --> 24:46.910 awaiting HQDAG1 approval . It's been 24:46.910 --> 24:48.966 through worldwide staffing , kind of 24:48.966 --> 24:51.132 all the administrative hurdles , but , 24:51.132 --> 24:53.077 um , it , it's looking good for an 24:53.077 --> 24:55.132 August approval . Um , so what we're 24:55.132 --> 24:58.430 looking for in terms of what qualifies 24:58.430 --> 25:00.589 you for a logistics data to to be a 25:00.589 --> 25:02.422 logistics slash sustainment data 25:02.422 --> 25:05.130 analyst . Um , it's really a master's 25:05.130 --> 25:08.640 degree in Uh , you know , a 25:08.640 --> 25:11.359 data-centric field , right ? Whether 25:11.359 --> 25:13.880 that be , um , you know , data 25:13.880 --> 25:17.000 analytics , data engineering , um , you 25:17.000 --> 25:19.167 know , information systems , something 25:19.167 --> 25:21.389 in that realm is what we're looking for 25:21.389 --> 25:24.160 is the primary vehicle to identify this 25:24.160 --> 25:27.109 talent . Um , we have 25:28.250 --> 25:30.472 I said that I did VCU a couple of years 25:30.472 --> 25:32.750 ago . We've essentially revamped the 25:32.750 --> 25:35.890 VCU program to make it more data 25:35.890 --> 25:37.729 centric so that officers who now 25:37.729 --> 25:40.930 graduate from this program are 25:40.930 --> 25:44.359 immediately eligible for um for this 25:44.369 --> 25:46.630 skill identifier , right ? So . In the 25:46.630 --> 25:48.797 past it was a master's in supply chain 25:48.797 --> 25:51.019 management , but now it's a master's in 25:51.019 --> 25:53.109 supply chain management with a 25:53.109 --> 25:55.930 concentration in supply chain slash 25:55.930 --> 25:58.359 decision analytics . Um , so we've , 25:58.650 --> 26:01.800 we've created a Instead of making the 26:01.800 --> 26:03.744 electives kind of a free for all , 26:03.744 --> 26:06.760 they're now being forced to take 4 26:06.760 --> 26:10.099 specific , you know , analytics centric 26:10.099 --> 26:12.680 electives , which now put this 26:12.680 --> 26:15.013 concentration onto their , their degree , 26:15.520 --> 26:17.742 um , and that's going to create for the 26:17.742 --> 26:20.099 logistics branch 20 officers annually , 26:20.400 --> 26:22.680 a cohort of 20 . Um , logistics 26:22.680 --> 26:25.339 analysts annually , uh , and annually . 26:25.630 --> 26:27.949 OK , so say somebody out there is like , 26:28.000 --> 26:30.056 I mean , I did the VCA program , you 26:30.056 --> 26:32.000 know , last year or something . My 26:32.000 --> 26:34.222 grandfathered into this , or right , so 26:34.222 --> 26:35.889 unfortunately , no , um , but 26:35.889 --> 26:38.056 fortunately for them , you should have 26:38.056 --> 26:40.278 received an email from me , uh , within 26:40.278 --> 26:42.500 the last couple of weeks that talked to 26:42.500 --> 26:44.556 you about the supplemental path to , 26:44.556 --> 26:46.667 you know , qualify yourself for these 26:46.667 --> 26:48.611 degrees because in theory , you've 26:48.611 --> 26:50.849 taken about 70% of the same classes , 26:51.390 --> 26:54.109 um , that the , these current , the 26:54.109 --> 26:56.165 future cohorts are gonna take , um , 26:56.165 --> 26:58.650 but you just need , you know , specific 26:58.650 --> 27:00.910 analytically-minded , you know , 27:01.109 --> 27:04.869 courses to , to supplement your path to , 27:05.089 --> 27:06.700 to , to be on the same level 27:06.700 --> 27:09.229 essentially . And so , um , this goes 27:09.229 --> 27:11.285 for somebody with , you know , let's 27:11.285 --> 27:13.430 say an MBA , um , from a different 27:13.430 --> 27:15.597 university , right ? Like you've got a 27:15.597 --> 27:17.652 master's in something . Um , kind of 27:17.652 --> 27:19.652 similar in the vein of supply chain 27:19.652 --> 27:21.819 management , um , not necessarily just 27:21.819 --> 27:23.930 like a bachelor or a master's of arts 27:23.930 --> 27:25.819 or something , but , you know , a 27:25.819 --> 27:28.390 master's in , in something that's in 27:28.390 --> 27:30.390 the realm . Um , we also have a 27:30.390 --> 27:33.170 supplemental path for those individuals 27:33.550 --> 27:36.229 to kind of grade out and be at the same 27:36.229 --> 27:39.060 level as somebody with a master's in , 27:39.189 --> 27:41.390 you know , in data analytics or 27:41.390 --> 27:43.501 something , right ? And so , a lot of 27:43.501 --> 27:46.550 that is through . Um , there's certain 27:46.550 --> 27:49.229 course specialization courses . There's 27:49.229 --> 27:51.430 a Johns Hopkins Hopkins Data Science 27:51.430 --> 27:54.329 certificate . Um , there's a , there's 27:54.329 --> 27:56.329 one from Harvard , there's one from 27:56.329 --> 27:58.496 Michigan that are all online and grant 27:58.496 --> 28:00.718 you these specialization certificates , 28:00.829 --> 28:03.420 um . I , I just finished the Johns 28:03.420 --> 28:06.380 Hopkins one . It took me about 4 pretty 28:06.380 --> 28:08.800 solid months of , of knocking it out . 28:09.089 --> 28:11.200 Um , so these are legitimate things . 28:11.200 --> 28:13.311 They're not your typical , you know , 28:13.699 --> 28:15.859 trying to check through the 600 S3 28:15.859 --> 28:18.026 requirements . Um , you do have to sit 28:18.026 --> 28:21.020 down , you do have to code , um , but 28:21.300 --> 28:24.380 we as the proponent feel that they meet 28:24.380 --> 28:26.380 the requirements necessary and that 28:26.380 --> 28:28.491 they would qualify you to then meet , 28:28.790 --> 28:30.846 you know , the threshold to become . 28:31.239 --> 28:33.572 N09 , you know , logistics data analyst . 28:33.660 --> 28:35.716 OK , so like someone like myself , I 28:35.716 --> 28:37.882 have my master's in transportation and 28:37.882 --> 28:39.993 logistics management . I'd be able to 28:39.993 --> 28:41.660 look into these supplementary 28:41.660 --> 28:43.827 certificates that you're speaking of . 28:43.827 --> 28:45.716 Yeah , absolutely . Like you're , 28:45.716 --> 28:45.689 you're a great case study there . So , 28:45.979 --> 28:48.201 you know , depending on , you'd send us 28:48.201 --> 28:50.479 your transcripts , we'd be able to say , 28:50.479 --> 28:52.701 you know , based off your transcripts , 28:52.701 --> 28:54.923 it looks like you , like maybe you took 28:54.923 --> 28:57.146 one analytics-based course , you know , 28:57.146 --> 28:59.146 and for your degree or two , So you 28:59.146 --> 29:02.569 need anywhere from 1 to 4 more 29:02.949 --> 29:05.469 data certificates or electives , and 29:05.469 --> 29:08.229 then we have an entire menu of options 29:08.229 --> 29:10.770 and , you know , the Johns Hopkins one 29:11.170 --> 29:13.349 that took me about 4 months , that 29:13.349 --> 29:15.571 one's worth 2 credits . But then you've 29:15.571 --> 29:17.460 got some of the more professional 29:17.460 --> 29:19.516 certifications like your , your Comp 29:19.516 --> 29:21.650 Tia plus , um , some of the Microsoft 29:21.650 --> 29:24.709 Azure . Um , certifications that you , 29:24.910 --> 29:26.966 professional certifications that you 29:26.966 --> 29:29.132 can get are also things that can grant 29:29.132 --> 29:31.354 you credit , um , to kind of supplement 29:31.354 --> 29:33.849 your path to , to be eligible . OK . 29:34.479 --> 29:36.590 That's a that's very interesting . So 29:36.590 --> 29:38.812 then there'd be people out there like , 29:38.812 --> 29:41.035 OK , I got this master's degree in this 29:41.035 --> 29:43.257 area now . I know , OK , there is a way 29:43.257 --> 29:42.880 forward so that I can , I don't have to 29:42.880 --> 29:45.102 go through the whole VCU program to get 29:45.102 --> 29:47.250 this . Absolutely . And all this will 29:47.250 --> 29:49.880 be available on our , the log pro web 29:49.880 --> 29:52.969 page . Um , we'll have , there'll be a 29:53.209 --> 29:55.209 logistics or sustainment functional 29:55.209 --> 29:57.376 data analyst tab . You click on that , 29:57.376 --> 29:59.431 and we provide the entire menu , you 29:59.431 --> 30:01.653 know , so if you're somebody with , you 30:01.653 --> 30:03.487 know , a supply chain masters or 30:03.487 --> 30:05.653 something , we'll have . Um , the link 30:05.653 --> 30:07.876 in there that you can click and see the 30:07.876 --> 30:09.987 menu for the supplemental path . Um , 30:09.987 --> 30:12.209 it'll also have the link to submit your 30:12.209 --> 30:14.042 packet in there . It's kind of a 30:14.042 --> 30:16.265 one-stop shop for the entirety of the , 30:16.265 --> 30:18.265 the skill identifier . OK , so on a 30:18.265 --> 30:20.376 unit side of the house , um , is this 30:20.376 --> 30:22.376 something that's going to be in the 30:22.376 --> 30:24.487 future for , you know , billets being 30:24.487 --> 30:26.709 coded for this , for positions ? Yeah , 30:26.709 --> 30:28.987 so we are working to , to code billets . 30:28.987 --> 30:31.153 A part of this approval process is the 30:31.153 --> 30:33.869 SI will be approved . Here come August 30:33.869 --> 30:37.729 2026 , and then , you know , because 30:37.829 --> 30:40.270 there's , there's typically a lag in 30:40.270 --> 30:44.150 coding of billets come FY 29 , so 30:44.150 --> 30:47.989 October 2028 , we have the initial 30:47.989 --> 30:50.619 push is 52 coded billets across the 30:50.619 --> 30:53.150 sustainment enterprise for the Lehman 30:53.150 --> 30:56.989 Nine . and so the really . The 30:56.989 --> 30:59.156 really good thing , or , you know , to 30:59.156 --> 31:01.211 me , the coolest thing about this L9 31:01.211 --> 31:04.410 skill identifier is that If you serve 31:04.410 --> 31:06.577 in these billets or you have the skill 31:06.577 --> 31:08.688 identifier , you're gonna be eligible 31:08.688 --> 31:10.799 for some additional key developmental 31:10.799 --> 31:13.021 opportunities . Um , so already written 31:13.530 --> 31:16.310 in our 600-3 is 31:17.050 --> 31:19.969 basically KD opportunities from the 31:19.969 --> 31:22.025 grade of , you know , lieutenant all 31:22.025 --> 31:24.247 the way through colonel for individuals 31:24.247 --> 31:27.310 who are doing data centric roles . Um , 31:27.369 --> 31:29.480 right now it's written for our direct 31:29.480 --> 31:31.591 commissioning applicants as well as . 31:31.591 --> 31:33.930 Some of our um individuals who have 31:33.930 --> 31:36.290 either V-tipped in or have just gone 31:36.290 --> 31:40.089 through the AI2C program , um , but 31:40.089 --> 31:41.867 once the L9 skill identifier is 31:41.867 --> 31:45.170 established , that verbiage in 600-3 31:45.170 --> 31:49.130 will transition to L9 specific . And so 31:49.130 --> 31:52.050 it'll basically say for the first half 31:52.050 --> 31:54.161 until the billets are coded , right ? 31:54.161 --> 31:57.239 So , from , let's say August 26th to 31:58.109 --> 32:01.489 September 2028 , it'll say if you 32:01.910 --> 32:04.060 basically are in a position where the 32:04.060 --> 32:06.229 duty title or job , you know , duty 32:06.229 --> 32:09.510 description lists as , you know , data 32:09.510 --> 32:13.030 engineer , data scientist , um , data 32:13.030 --> 32:15.363 analyst , and that's in your , you know , 32:15.390 --> 32:17.501 your duty title and description , and 32:17.501 --> 32:19.446 you have the L9 skill identifier , 32:19.829 --> 32:21.607 you're eligible for KD for that 32:21.607 --> 32:23.718 position you're serving in . Once the 32:23.718 --> 32:25.829 billets are coded , it'll then switch 32:25.829 --> 32:27.996 to . You need to have L9 and be in one 32:27.996 --> 32:30.273 of those billets for it to count as KD , 32:30.273 --> 32:32.440 but those billets will be , you know , 32:32.440 --> 32:34.709 KD opportunities for , for qualified 32:34.709 --> 32:36.820 officers . Definite into , you know , 32:36.829 --> 32:38.662 future conversation , but really 32:38.662 --> 32:40.773 digging into all the updates of 600-3 32:40.773 --> 32:42.940 and just , um , seeing all the changes 32:42.940 --> 32:45.290 to the logistics branch pretty much , 32:45.630 --> 32:47.849 um . So on that one thing I wanted to 32:47.849 --> 32:49.890 clarify for this SI , is this only 32:49.890 --> 32:52.819 available for officers then ? So to 32:52.819 --> 32:55.150 start with , yes , um , so this is the 32:55.150 --> 32:57.469 reason I keep saying logistics slash 32:57.469 --> 32:59.750 sustainment functional data analyst . 32:59.859 --> 33:02.869 Um , so when I talk August 26th 33:02.869 --> 33:05.489 approval , this will be for 90 alphas 33:05.489 --> 33:07.349 only , right ? So for officers , 33:07.540 --> 33:09.910 logistics officers only is what the 33:09.910 --> 33:12.819 original skill identifier request was , 33:12.910 --> 33:15.770 was submitted for , um , but then come 33:16.069 --> 33:18.125 immediately following the approval , 33:18.125 --> 33:20.347 we're going to submit a revision . That 33:20.347 --> 33:21.958 will then open it up for the 33:21.958 --> 33:24.069 sustainment community at large , um , 33:24.069 --> 33:27.939 and so that will include . AG 33:27.939 --> 33:30.217 officers , finance officers , you know , 33:30.217 --> 33:31.939 your EOD officers , as well as 33:31.939 --> 33:33.939 logistics officers , and then every 33:33.939 --> 33:36.099 sustainment warrant officer as well 33:36.099 --> 33:40.099 will be eligible for this L9 once we 33:40.099 --> 33:42.420 revise it . The billets though 33:42.420 --> 33:44.859 currently are only going to go to 90 33:44.859 --> 33:47.026 alphas , so we have no plans to extend 33:47.026 --> 33:49.540 this to any of the other officers and 33:49.540 --> 33:53.430 branches . OK , so 33:53.790 --> 33:56.012 when it comes to , and it , so just for 33:56.012 --> 33:58.123 clarification , nothing on the in the 33:58.123 --> 34:00.401 enlisted side , nothing yet , um , but , 34:00.401 --> 34:02.568 and that'll be a completely separate , 34:02.670 --> 34:04.670 they wouldn't fall under L9 because 34:04.670 --> 34:06.614 they would go through , you know , 34:06.614 --> 34:08.837 either ASI or SQI or however we want to 34:08.837 --> 34:10.948 code it , but it would be , it'd be a 34:10.948 --> 34:13.170 separate identifier for them , um , but 34:13.170 --> 34:14.726 we are in the works of , of 34:14.726 --> 34:16.892 establishing a separate identifier for 34:16.892 --> 34:19.003 the enlisted side as well , OK . It's 34:19.003 --> 34:21.059 definitely a unique time where we've 34:21.059 --> 34:23.226 talked a lot about uh when it comes to 34:23.226 --> 34:23.019 continuous transformation in the army 34:23.019 --> 34:25.019 and just seeing the way the army is 34:25.019 --> 34:28.388 adapting to this new , this new fight 34:28.388 --> 34:30.332 ahead . We talked a lot about , of 34:30.332 --> 34:32.444 course , when it comes to large scale 34:32.444 --> 34:34.499 combat operations , everything comes 34:34.499 --> 34:36.610 with a tick , but now just seeing the 34:36.610 --> 34:38.277 way the army is changing with 34:38.277 --> 34:40.388 recognizing the impact of data now we 34:40.388 --> 34:42.555 talked to direct commissioning piece , 34:42.555 --> 34:42.549 now we're , you know , getting into the 34:42.549 --> 34:44.716 skill identifier piece and just seeing 34:44.716 --> 34:46.938 the way . We've recognized that data if 34:46.938 --> 34:48.993 you talked about beforehand , it was 34:48.993 --> 34:51.105 just like , hey , you , I'm good with 34:51.105 --> 34:53.216 data now you're the data person . Now 34:53.216 --> 34:54.938 it's bringing that as a combat 34:54.938 --> 34:57.105 multiplier for the unit , uh , and for 34:57.105 --> 34:59.739 these bills just to , to , um , get a 34:59.739 --> 35:01.850 good understanding for the audience . 35:01.979 --> 35:04.090 These are these gonna be higher level 35:04.090 --> 35:06.423 positions ? I know we talked , you know , 35:06.423 --> 35:06.000 different for the different ranks , but 35:06.000 --> 35:08.167 is this something that's gonna be like 35:08.167 --> 35:10.167 a higher headquarters position , or 35:10.167 --> 35:09.659 will you find these still at like a 35:09.659 --> 35:11.992 battalion level or even a company level , 35:11.992 --> 35:14.770 right ? So for the initial . Uh , 35:15.219 --> 35:17.330 pretty much for the , the entirety of 35:17.330 --> 35:19.810 the push , um . This will be a kind of 35:19.810 --> 35:22.090 a phased waterfall method , um , but 35:22.090 --> 35:24.300 we're going to start with . You know , 35:24.600 --> 35:26.360 enterprise and strategic level 35:26.939 --> 35:29.050 positions , right ? So you're talking 35:29.050 --> 35:31.161 about your CASCO headquarters , AMC , 35:31.161 --> 35:33.419 ASC type headquarters , even up at uh 35:33.419 --> 35:36.100 HQDAG4 , we have positions , and then 35:36.100 --> 35:38.620 down to , you know , your TSEs , your 35:38.620 --> 35:41.300 ESC CSEs , um , as well as your 35:41.300 --> 35:43.133 sustainable brigades or division 35:43.133 --> 35:45.244 sustainable brigades . Those are kind 35:45.244 --> 35:47.356 of the , the areas that we're looking 35:47.356 --> 35:49.719 to push individuals into , um , also 35:49.719 --> 35:53.550 with , within . Each of the CTCs , um , 35:53.649 --> 35:56.300 we have individuals identified , um , 35:56.610 --> 35:58.832 so that they can do , you know , really 35:58.832 --> 36:02.449 data-centric analysis of 36:02.449 --> 36:04.505 what's occurring within , you know , 36:04.505 --> 36:06.227 the sustainment formations and 36:06.227 --> 36:08.505 sustainment in general out of the CTCs , 36:08.550 --> 36:10.717 um , but that's , that's kind of where 36:10.717 --> 36:13.709 that is for the L9 . And then kind of 36:13.709 --> 36:15.653 some insider baseball or or what's 36:15.653 --> 36:17.830 coming down the pipe is that we're 36:17.830 --> 36:20.790 looking to establish a different skill 36:20.790 --> 36:23.068 identifier that will trickle down into , 36:23.389 --> 36:25.333 you know , the tactical level , so 36:25.333 --> 36:29.030 think . Um , you know , your BSBs with 36:29.030 --> 36:32.590 MBCTs or even , you know , the DSSBs , 36:32.669 --> 36:36.169 CSSBs , and so those will be not as 36:36.429 --> 36:39.449 highly skilled as what the sustainment 36:39.629 --> 36:41.796 functional data analysts will be , but 36:41.796 --> 36:43.962 they will be individuals who are , you 36:43.962 --> 36:45.518 know , extremely capable of 36:45.518 --> 36:47.909 manipulating and visualizing data , um , 36:48.550 --> 36:52.310 right , because We had a meeting with 36:52.310 --> 36:55.429 one of the , um , you know , the lead 36:55.429 --> 36:58.610 sustainment OCs down at , at JMR or 36:58.610 --> 37:01.790 JRTC , um , and we asked them , you 37:01.790 --> 37:04.012 know , how many units that come through 37:04.012 --> 37:07.070 do you see utilizing , you know , any , 37:07.149 --> 37:09.316 any sort of data visualization when it 37:09.316 --> 37:11.371 comes to , you know , projecting log 37:11.371 --> 37:12.982 stats , project , projecting 37:12.982 --> 37:15.300 sustainment , um . And their answer was 37:15.300 --> 37:17.300 none . Like we still don't see it , 37:17.300 --> 37:19.522 right ? And so what we want is for them 37:19.522 --> 37:22.649 to have the capability to begin to 37:23.620 --> 37:25.509 really focus on , you know , data 37:25.509 --> 37:27.564 visualization of this of sustainment 37:27.564 --> 37:29.731 even down at the tactical level . No , 37:29.731 --> 37:31.787 I think that's a fantastic way to go 37:31.787 --> 37:33.731 about it is to be having different 37:33.731 --> 37:36.439 degrees to show this expertise in . I 37:36.439 --> 37:38.106 mean we see it with um at the 37:38.106 --> 37:40.639 instructor badge is a one or I know in 37:40.639 --> 37:42.806 Alaska when I when I was up there when 37:42.806 --> 37:44.861 actually when I was leaving they had 37:44.861 --> 37:46.861 you know brought these Arctic skill 37:46.861 --> 37:46.159 identifiers but there's different 37:46.159 --> 37:48.439 degrees to it based on what training 37:48.439 --> 37:50.479 you have and it's just a good that 37:50.479 --> 37:52.535 we're bringing this on the data side 37:52.535 --> 37:54.701 because it's not this , this catch all 37:54.701 --> 37:56.701 you have to be at this top level it 37:56.701 --> 37:58.646 still shows that progression and I 37:58.646 --> 38:00.590 imagine , uh , once of course this 38:00.590 --> 38:02.757 plays out . You get that entry level , 38:02.757 --> 38:04.868 you know , just go down where you can 38:04.868 --> 38:06.923 still move up to the next one then , 38:06.923 --> 38:09.459 right . So just , it's good to see 38:09.459 --> 38:11.570 that's how , you know , we're , we're 38:11.570 --> 38:13.792 thinking ahead , that kind of stuff for 38:13.792 --> 38:15.903 sure . So as we get ready to close up 38:15.903 --> 38:18.126 today's conversation , you know , we've 38:18.126 --> 38:20.126 talked a lot about when it comes to 38:20.126 --> 38:19.860 direct commissioning , but also really 38:19.860 --> 38:22.082 this , you know , skill identifier that 38:22.082 --> 38:24.193 we're , we're bringing to the force . 38:24.193 --> 38:24.129 So is there anything else you wanna 38:24.129 --> 38:26.407 highlight to the community on the , uh , 38:26.407 --> 38:28.573 skill identifier skill identifier part 38:28.573 --> 38:30.351 of it ? Yeah , I think it , the 38:30.351 --> 38:32.518 billeting is the big piece that I kind 38:32.518 --> 38:34.518 of want to hammer home is , is this 38:34.518 --> 38:38.040 will grow . As the population grows , 38:38.120 --> 38:40.176 right ? So , like I said , we've got 38:40.176 --> 38:43.699 the 20 kind of annually that we'll get , 38:43.719 --> 38:45.997 um , that , that are , you know , from , 38:46.280 --> 38:48.447 for lack of a better term , you know , 38:48.447 --> 38:50.613 locked in , right ? Like we can expect 38:50.613 --> 38:53.280 20 a year , um , and so if we're 38:53.280 --> 38:55.080 getting more than that because 38:55.080 --> 38:57.247 individuals are going out on their own 38:57.247 --> 38:59.247 and getting , you know , a graduate 38:59.247 --> 39:01.302 degree in , in these areas , um , or 39:01.302 --> 39:03.469 we're direct commissioning individuals 39:03.469 --> 39:05.524 because we're getting more qualified 39:05.524 --> 39:07.747 applicants that flow in . The number of 39:07.747 --> 39:09.747 billets that we're able to code for 39:09.747 --> 39:11.913 each , you know , subsequent year will 39:11.913 --> 39:14.024 increase . Um , so basically , as our 39:14.024 --> 39:16.080 population increased , the number of 39:16.080 --> 39:18.191 billets will also increase , um , you 39:18.191 --> 39:20.136 know , it , it's not a one for one 39:20.136 --> 39:22.136 match , right ? Like if we , if you 39:22.136 --> 39:24.358 have 100 qualified officers , you can't 39:24.358 --> 39:26.247 have 100 qualified billets , um , 39:26.247 --> 39:28.302 because at the end of the day . This 39:28.302 --> 39:30.570 does not lock you into a career path , 39:30.830 --> 39:33.149 um , right , this is a career enhancer . 39:33.189 --> 39:35.411 It's not , you're not now a function in 39:35.411 --> 39:37.467 a functional and , um , a functional 39:37.467 --> 39:39.689 area , right ? You're not on a specific 39:39.689 --> 39:42.540 track , you're just , you now have the 39:42.540 --> 39:44.762 opportunity to serve in these billets , 39:44.762 --> 39:46.984 um , but you can serve in these billets 39:46.984 --> 39:49.207 and then you could go be a BSBSO at the 39:49.207 --> 39:51.207 same time . You could then go , you 39:51.207 --> 39:53.429 know , command your way , um , but then 39:53.429 --> 39:55.762 having the opportunity to then say , OK , 39:55.762 --> 39:57.707 but now I wanna go do , you know , 39:57.707 --> 39:59.651 data-centric roles for a couple of 39:59.651 --> 40:01.762 years . Um , you have the opportunity 40:01.762 --> 40:03.984 to do that with this skill identifier . 40:03.984 --> 40:06.262 Um , so yeah , well , thank you , Kath . 40:06.262 --> 40:08.318 Yeah , it's a good piece to To close 40:08.318 --> 40:10.540 out on because people might hear this , 40:10.540 --> 40:10.010 but OK , wait , am I not gonna , is 40:10.010 --> 40:12.010 this gonna take me out of my career 40:12.010 --> 40:14.177 trajectory ? Is this gonna take me out 40:14.177 --> 40:16.232 of the opportunity to command in the 40:16.232 --> 40:18.399 future ? So it's good to see that this 40:18.399 --> 40:20.677 is like pretty much any other position . 40:20.677 --> 40:22.343 It enables you to be a combat 40:22.343 --> 40:22.090 multiplier because you're bringing that 40:22.090 --> 40:24.610 specialized skill set to the force for 40:24.610 --> 40:26.721 a time , but then you can continue on 40:26.721 --> 40:29.219 whichever path you want to go . Awesome . 40:29.370 --> 40:31.969 So . As we always close out with , um , 40:32.030 --> 40:34.252 give you an opportunity to kind of give 40:34.252 --> 40:36.141 some advice or some wisdom to the 40:36.141 --> 40:38.252 systemic community from your years of 40:38.252 --> 40:40.308 service . So what would you have for 40:40.308 --> 40:40.250 them out to the audience out there ? 40:40.659 --> 40:42.881 Yeah , I would say we've , we've talked 40:42.881 --> 40:45.919 a lot about . Right , about data , um , 40:46.169 --> 40:48.409 and that , that's the way that the 40:48.409 --> 40:50.689 world is shifting , but I think we also 40:50.689 --> 40:53.250 have to remember the basics , like we 40:53.250 --> 40:55.689 have to be founded in , or we have to 40:55.689 --> 40:57.909 have a foundation in the sustainment 40:57.909 --> 41:00.050 principles and then just , just the 41:00.050 --> 41:02.850 basics of being a sustainer , um , and 41:02.850 --> 41:06.250 so definitely improving your capability 41:06.250 --> 41:08.610 in the data realm is important , um . 41:09.189 --> 41:12.419 But not losing sight of , of the basics , 41:12.429 --> 41:15.510 and that's why we've gone this route , 41:15.709 --> 41:18.310 right ? That you have horses , um , you 41:18.310 --> 41:20.532 have individuals who are , who are very 41:20.532 --> 41:22.389 analytically minded in certain 41:22.389 --> 41:24.111 functional analysts or certain 41:24.111 --> 41:26.870 functional areas . And so , the most 41:26.870 --> 41:28.981 important thing to us was making sure 41:28.981 --> 41:31.649 that we had sustainment ground , you 41:31.649 --> 41:33.816 know , individuals who are grounded in 41:33.816 --> 41:36.679 sustainment , who are able to also do 41:36.679 --> 41:40.060 the data roles . Um , and so that's 41:40.060 --> 41:42.282 what's important to us is making sure . 41:42.439 --> 41:44.661 That foundation , people who are at the 41:44.661 --> 41:47.280 basics and then people who can do the 41:47.280 --> 41:49.679 data stuff and combining them into one . 41:51.000 --> 41:54.139 and , you know , personally , for me 41:54.439 --> 41:58.080 is At the end of the day , you have to 41:58.080 --> 42:00.191 accept the fact that as a sustainer , 42:00.191 --> 42:02.024 you are , you're in the customer 42:02.024 --> 42:04.302 service industry , um , and I think if , 42:04.370 --> 42:06.520 if you try and fight that and you're 42:06.520 --> 42:08.631 constantly in a position where you're 42:08.631 --> 42:10.631 not looking to get to yes , right , 42:10.719 --> 42:12.497 when you're looking at , at the 42:12.497 --> 42:14.608 sustainment operations and support in 42:14.608 --> 42:16.608 general , um , then you're probably 42:17.000 --> 42:19.280 doing yourself and the unit that you're 42:19.280 --> 42:21.840 supporting a disservice , um , so 42:22.159 --> 42:24.381 that's kind of my personal foundation , 42:24.381 --> 42:26.600 right , is like , Is be the best 42:26.600 --> 42:28.656 customer service representative that 42:28.656 --> 42:31.120 you can , and also , you know , get to 42:31.120 --> 42:33.719 yes in the most legal , ethical and 42:33.719 --> 42:36.620 moral way possible , right ? Well , 42:36.699 --> 42:38.810 thank you for that , Kelly . Yeah , I 42:38.810 --> 42:40.977 really appreciate that piece of advice 42:40.977 --> 42:42.977 for the community as we continue to 42:42.977 --> 42:45.199 integrate technology and pretty much in 42:45.199 --> 42:44.889 everything , but always remember 42:44.889 --> 42:46.889 staying back to the basics .
