WEBVTT 00:00.009 --> 00:02.200 My name is Chaplain Fareed Awad and I 00:02.210 --> 00:04.099 am currently serving as the state 00:04.099 --> 00:06.154 chaplain for the North Carolina Army 00:06.154 --> 00:08.377 National Guard . We are here to partner 00:08.377 --> 00:10.909 with Zambia as we continue the African 00:10.920 --> 00:13.779 community outreach and development . We 00:13.789 --> 00:16.579 are here to develop relationships with 00:16.590 --> 00:18.368 our partners from other African 00:18.368 --> 00:20.729 countries . Chaplaincy is so important 00:20.739 --> 00:22.739 because we really do believe that a 00:22.739 --> 00:24.899 strong spiritual being is a strong 00:24.909 --> 00:27.469 soldier and we are force multipliers , 00:27.479 --> 00:29.701 but we are also serving to be spiritual 00:29.701 --> 00:32.290 healers for our soldiers . As you know , 00:32.299 --> 00:34.355 we have been through 22 years of war 00:34.355 --> 00:37.330 now and the spirit of our soldiers need 00:37.340 --> 00:39.619 to be healed from all that trauma and 00:39.630 --> 00:42.310 combat experience . So we believe that 00:42.319 --> 00:44.380 chaplaincy is so important because a 00:44.479 --> 00:47.770 strong spiritual soldier is a strong 00:48.119 --> 00:50.529 soldier that could continue fighting 00:50.759 --> 00:52.870 collaboration between the active duty 00:52.870 --> 00:55.037 component , the National Guard and the 00:55.037 --> 00:57.148 Reserves . And having people from the 00:57.148 --> 00:59.259 Navy , the Air Force , the Army and 00:59.270 --> 01:01.259 other component is really helpful 01:01.270 --> 01:03.492 because we get to collaborate with each 01:03.492 --> 01:06.879 other and to pollinate with the ideas 01:07.160 --> 01:09.940 that we share across different branches , 01:09.949 --> 01:12.171 everyone has their own experience . And 01:12.171 --> 01:14.338 when we come together , the collective 01:14.338 --> 01:16.560 experience of each of us is much better 01:16.560 --> 01:18.782 than the single experience of the one . 01:18.782 --> 01:20.782 So we really get to learn from each 01:20.782 --> 01:22.838 other and lessons learned are always 01:22.838 --> 01:24.949 helpful so we could continue to share 01:24.949 --> 01:27.116 and develop how to develop and provide 01:27.116 --> 01:29.239 counseling and pastoral care to our 01:29.250 --> 01:31.529 soldiers . So the National Guard is 01:31.540 --> 01:33.540 very unique because we have soldier 01:33.540 --> 01:35.760 citizens and our citizens continue to 01:35.769 --> 01:37.714 serve in their communities , have 01:37.724 --> 01:39.885 civilian jobs and professions while 01:39.894 --> 01:41.894 coming into the Guard one week in a 01:41.894 --> 01:44.005 month and at least two weeks a year , 01:44.005 --> 01:45.616 that's the minimum that they 01:45.616 --> 01:47.783 participate in their military duties . 01:47.783 --> 01:49.950 But they have a lot more to contribute 01:49.950 --> 01:49.904 than that . But because of their 01:49.915 --> 01:52.915 citizen soldier status , they get to 01:52.925 --> 01:55.944 serve their state while continuing to 01:55.955 --> 01:58.250 be civilians . The state partnership 01:58.260 --> 02:00.480 program is also very unique because we 02:00.489 --> 02:03.779 have longevity with our partner nations . 02:03.790 --> 02:06.120 For example , we have had over three 02:06.129 --> 02:08.839 decades of partnership with Botswana 02:08.960 --> 02:10.627 and now we are picking up the 02:10.627 --> 02:12.849 partnership with Zambia and Malawi . We 02:12.849 --> 02:14.849 are really excited about the ribbon 02:14.849 --> 02:16.793 cutting that is coming up in a few 02:16.793 --> 02:19.016 weeks as we begin that relationship and 02:19.016 --> 02:18.830 look forward to learning from each 02:18.839 --> 02:20.895 other and sharing information across 02:20.895 --> 02:23.179 the globe so that we could be better 02:23.190 --> 02:25.279 chaplains and serve our soldiers better .
