Maj. Gen. Erik C. Peterson assumed command of First Army Division West on June 26, 2017.

Maj. Gen. Peterson earned his commission in 1986 from the University of Idaho’s Chrisman Battalion, Army ROTC. His most recent duty assignment was the Director of Army Aviation, Headquarters Department of the Army, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7.

Maj. Gen. Peterson has served in a range of command and staff assignments, including Commanding General, U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command (Airborne); Deputy Commanding General for Support, 2nd Infantry Division; Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Cadet Command; Chief of Staff, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry); Brigade Commander, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade; Director, Flight Concepts Division; Commander, 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne); and other command and staff positions within the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne).

Maj. Gen. Peterson’s overseas assignments include Republic of Korea and operational deployments for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq; Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti; Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan; Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq; and other contingency operations.

Maj. Gen. Peterson is a graduate of the Aviation Officer Basic Course, the Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course, Aviation Officer Advanced Course, and the Combined Arms Service Staff School. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and National War College. He has earned Masters of Arts in Business Administration and National Security Strategy.

Maj. Gen. Peterson’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (V), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, NATO Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Master Army Aviator Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and Army Staff Badge.
