Maj. Gen. Mark McCormack

Deputy Commanding General - Operations

MG McCormack was assigned as Deputy Commanding General-Operations for First United States Army in July 2024, responsible for oversight of Reserve Component Training and Readiness.  His previous assignments include Commanding General, 28th Infantry Division, Deputy Commanding General-Support, 28th Infantry Division, J1 for the Pennsylvania National Guard, and Commander, 213th Regional Support Group.

MG McCormack’s operational deployments include Operation Joint Endeavor/Joint Guard, in the former Yugoslavia, from February 1997 to October 1997, Operation Iraqi Freedom, as the Deputy Commander for the 213th Area Support Group, from April 2007 to April 2008, Deputy Commanding General (Support), Operation Spartan Shield in Kuwait from February 2018 to November 2018.  MG McCormack served most recently as Commander of Operation Spartan Sheild, October 2022 to August 2023, with direct command responsibility for multiple missions across the CENTCOM area of responsibility.  

MG McCormack’s Domestic Operations (DOMOPS) experience includes serving twice as the Pennsylvania Dual Status Commander (DSC) during COVID-19 response operations, Officer in Charge for the PAARNG Joint Task Force supporting the 2020 response to civil unrest in Philadelphia, commanding over 2800 soldiers for a 10-day period of State Active Duty.  He maintained command oversight of the FEMA Region III Homeland Response Force (HRF) from 2020-2024.

MG McCormack holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He is a graduate of numerous military schools including the United States Army War College, the Command and General Staff Officers Course, the Dual Status Commanders Course, the Joint Task Force Commander Training Course, the Theater Sustainment Course, the Baltic Defense College Senior Leaders Course, and the Syracuse University National Security Management Course.

MG McCormack’s awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (w/1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (w/1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation medal (with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Iraq Campaign Medal (with 1 Bronze Service Star) Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
