Just slightly more than a month after the formation of First Army it would lead more than 500,000 American Soldiers into combat during the St. Mihiel offensive. 12-15 September 1918.

Just 10 days following the largest American offensive in history, First Army would successfully pull 500,000 troops out of combat at St. Mihiel and redeploy them more than 60 miles to a new front.  Those Soldiers would then engage in the, now largest, American led offensive to date employing over 1 million Soldiers during the course of the offensive.  The battle would be known as the Meuse Argonne offensive and would last from 26 September to 11 November 1918.
