Colonel Hank Barnes

189th Infantry Commander

Colonel Hank Barnes is a Virginia native, an infantryman, and a graduate of the Citadel. He is married to the former Lori Wilkes from Atlanta, GA. They have two children, Olivia, age 15, and William, age 13. They enjoy travelling, sports, hiking, and anything on the water. COL Barnes served at the platoon to the Corps level in command and staff assignments around the world. These included light, Stryker, and airborne units, in the United States and abroad, and deployed on combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. COL Barnes served as a platoon leader in the 101 st Airborne Division, a Company Commander in 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, and an Officer Commanding in 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (UK). He returned to the 101st to command 3 rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment. 3rd Brigade. Following command, COL Barnes served as a Task Force Senior, Operations Group, Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk. He also served in staff positions in the Ranger Training Brigade, 2 nd Infantry Division in Korea, 4 th Brigade 25th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Alaska, and I Corps at Joint Base Lewis McChord. COL Barnes’ military and civilian education includes the Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Course, Air Assault Course, Jumpmaster Course, Infantry Captains Career Course, Command and General Staff College, and the Naval War College. He has master’s degrees in International Relations and National Security and Strategic Studies. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (5 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC). He wears the Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
