VADM John Mustin Get Real Get Better Module 1 How We Must Change
Commander, Navy Reserve Force
Oct. 14, 2022 | 2:29
Transcript:

Shipmates…Vice Admiral John Mustin, Chief of Navy Reserve, and Commander, Navy Reserve Force here.

The Navy with a culture that self-assesses, self-corrects, learns, and innovates better than the opposition gains an enduring warfighting advantage. That principle is the “Get Real, Get Better” North Star…and it is the foundational underpinning of our ongoing generational transformation of the Navy Reserve.

I am fully committed to answering the Chief of Naval Operations’ call to “Get Real, Get Better.” And I need – and expect – you to be, too.

This is about Warfighting Readiness.

As I’ve said before, today’s security environment is increasingly competitive, faster paced, and more complex than even five short years ago.

The forces that seek to reshape the international rules-based order have amplified and added coherency to their efforts.

To counter these existential threats, we are aggressively modernizing our Reserve Force and the way we generate readinness…accelerating our pursuit of peerless, world class performance, measured by our one and only priority, Warfighting Readiness.
Throughout every step of this transformation, a “Get Real, Get Better” mindset will guide every decision we make and every action we take. To be ready, to fight, and to win in conflict, I am asking you to adapt the behaviors and problem solving methods that will evelate our collecitve performance. At the same time, I’m asking you to jettison the self-talk that holds us back from achieving what we will be called upon to deliver in a highly competitive security environment.
“Get Real” is about self-assessing, and “Get Better” is about self-correcting, and focusing on what matters most.

Each one of us must look critically at our own environment. If the way we are doing business does not improve mobilzation and mission readiness, and therefore individual warfighting effectiveness, stop and ask “why” and “how can this be done better”. Our ability to consistantly adopt a self-assessing, self-correcting culture will drive the enduring positive change essential to delivering on our organizational mandate: to provide critical strategic depth…a Reserve Force designed, trained, and ready to fight.

We need all hands on deck. Each of us taking a hard look at ourselves, challenging the status quo, and innovating to develop warfighting-ready reserve sailors…faster.

Let’s get busy.
